if you understand the basics of electricity, you'll be grand.
the basics being current, voltage and resistance. and it's crazy dangerous when you don't use it properly.
a background knowledge of ohm's law is definitely useful, as is knowing which wire is live, neutral and earth.

i'm doing a multi skill apprenticeship atm, and it's bloody fascinating. you'll be taught everything you need to know, as apprentices really start from the ground up.

Ohm's Law ---> V=IR , R=V/I , I=V/R (where I is current measured in Amps [A], V is voltage, measured in volts [V] and R is resistance, measured in ohms [symbol is greek letter, omega]

according to BS7671, the current wiring regulations in the UK (also known as the 17th edition), live is brown, blue is neutral and green&yellow is earth.

Just go to the IBEW local union hall, talk to the business representative, and tell him you want to be an apprentice/apprentice helper(first); ask to be considered for the apprenticeship. If they accept you, they train you/provide both the job and the training.

So: Some states have mutual agreements to recognize each others licenses and experiences. Ohio and Kentucky, I don't know, but you can find out by calling the state licensing board at either capital. Your local building inspectors office may give you a wealth of information.
