In the US, many universities have intern programs, where you study for a semester and work for a semester. The Universities match you up with a job.

Actually it is hard to find any work based on your field. I was lucky to find work as a construction laborer during the summer. Others worked in restaurants. It was not until after my 3rd year that I found a summer job in my area.
After you graduate, you hope to find a job. The best way they say is to network, and you can start that now. Get to know your professors, get them to know you in a good way. You don't have to be the smartest one in the class. Find out about the Chemical Engineers Society. Do they have dinner meetings or conferences in your area. Will they let you, a poor student, (not academically), attend their meeting. You get to talk to real live engineers, and now you have contacts to ask advice.

Instead of a summer "job" you might want to try getting an internship, or even volunteering at an engineering firm. 16 credits is a full load, but it won't quite get you out in four years, will it. Employers don't expect you to have work experience right when you graduate.

And taking a heavy load in the Summer is a surefire way to induce burnout before you have even started.
