I am a volunteer event organiser for several years, so can't say on salary part, but yes, organising an event can be a very tiring but satisfying job. For a one day event, I could take up to 3 months to brainstorm the ideas, draft it out and implement it on the actual day, tons of things to look into esp for big events. You will be very satisfied if things go well during the event day, but of cos no matter how hard u planned, there will be some hiccups on the day, u will have to always be prepared for unexpected situation. I would say, go for it, u will find it interesting and will enjoy it more when u get the hang of it. Will be happy to share with u more on the little i know thru my limited experience in events planning. :)

Absolutely - volunteering is a perfect way to build your resume in your industry. Just be sure to make an effort to learn and do as much as you can while you are there. Pay attention tot he organization running the event - understand who each person is and what they are responsible for. Get there very early and stay late, to observe as much as you can. You don;t want to just say you volunteered at the event; you want to be able to say specifically what you contributed to the event's success.
