Experiences Of Work

Doris Said:

Where can a school student find journalism work experiences?

We Answered:

Hi Radha,
If you go to London, visit many of the Newspaper media offices in Fleet Street and talk with the editors.

Try TV stations.

Best wishes.

What are some online colleges that offer degrees using life/work experiences?

We Answered:

University of Phoenix allows you credits for life skills that you have gotten from work/experience. The only thing is you have to pay for them to verify all the info you give them, but you do get it credited. I think it is like $150.

How to write effective past work experiences when applying for new job?

We Answered:

In terms of your overall resume, I think a great way to go is to list the major duties of each of your previous jobs. If you have any innovations or accomplishments that show initiative and responsibility put them in there too. I usually go with a bulleted list under each job so something like (in my case):

Technical Writer

--Work with programmers and designers to understand and explain software functions

--Write, edit, proofread and update all online documentation of (computer software name)

--Supervised 2 interns over six-month internship periods; wrote final evaluations for interns

Then when you apply for specific jobs, in your cover letter you can explain how specific skills or experiences you have connect to what they are looking for in that position. Like "My experience gained over 6 years of security work coupled with my extensive military training will enable me to provide excellent security for the location in addition to my other caretaker duties." Or something to that effect.

Good luck!

I'm looking for a job in the food industry or retail and have no work experiences whatsoever?

We Answered:

Hi,
any life experience is relevant so mention all of that. Be personable and point out that you have good personal relationship skills, are a team player and work well under stress all very relevant in the hospitality business. If there is a restaurant you have in mind do some research on them so if you are interviewed you know about them and explain why you would want to work for them exactly.
Do you want to be front house or kitchen or service?
If you want to do service eventually you may want to consider busgirl (Clearing) to tables to start also usually includes tips.
Front house starting position is hostess or cashier. Good if you are thinking about management eventually. If not kitchen help can be started with food prep and dishwasher.
Good luck it is a fun business to be involved in!

To introverts, Do you have any bad work experiences due to your introversion?

We Answered:

I have a natural reserve, and in one situation my behavior was interpreted as smugness, disinterest, and snottiness. I actually left, as they assumed so many false things about me it was impossible to rectify. Once I heard that my own manager referred to me as Ms High Horse, I left on my own.

In my next position I went out of my way to introduce myself, shake hands and smile, be more chatty...then I heard someone ask another, "Doesn't she do ANY work!?"

You can' t win.
