Farm Work Experience

Terrence Said:

Work Experience, PIG farm in Hertfordshire, (or bucks or Beds)?

We Answered:

Enquire at your local vets, they will know as good as anyone who to get in touch with. They may even let you go with them to introduce you. You may also consider looking to work on a sheep farm (or dairy farm) at this time of year as it is a busy time and you might be welcomed as a shepherdess. I know you may have already got your experience n that field, just a suggestion.

Josephine Said:

Is it vital to get work experience in a farm to go to a vet school?

We Answered:

Its best to gain experience of working with all different types of animals, and as vets will deal with cattle and sheep more than giraffes and elephants, its a good idea to get some farm work experience. A lot of your course will be based on these types of domestic animals, and very little on exotics, so farm experience will be far more valuable and useful. Most sheep farms take on help around lambing times, and its often paid, so that might be a good time to try and get some experience. If all else fails, contact vet surgeries in the outskirts of the city to see if they have any farmer clients. You could either ring the farms, or see if you can shadow the vets.
