Derek Said:

Forensic Science help please?

We Answered:

Take lots of science and legal studies. I'm pretty sure that in Australia (like here in Canada) crime scene techs are actually sworn police officers (not civilians like they show on CSI). After high school I would recommend taking something like police foundations at college and then becoming an officer. After a few years as an officer you should have the opportunity to apply to the forensic investigation unit. As for work experience, look for summer student opportunities at local police stations.

If you decide against becoming an officer and want to work in a forensics lab, you'll need at minimum a masters in some science (ie. biology, chemistry, physics...) Labs most often employ civillians =) Hope that helps!

Also, keep in mind that it's not like you see on tv. There is no crossover, you don't collect evidence and then go process it, nor do you interrogate suspects/witnesses/victims. Everything is very compartmentalized to prevent cross-contamination. You also need to be sure that this is the career for you. You might be able to watch gore on tv, but I've seen plenty of people pass out at their first morgue visit. It is a disturbing, smelly and difficult job and it takes a special kind of person to deal with it.

What are Year 10's aloud to do on work experience?

We Answered:

When I did work experience I was really fortunate to get one of the much sought after positions at the zoo as a keeper for the week. It was awesome!

In relation to work experience in the field of forensic science, most likely you'll have difficulty getting a spot to do work experience. There are strict guidelines that forensic scientists have to follow and a it's too risky to have work experience person under foot for any period of time. Mistakes are likely to be made and evidence likely to be destroyed. Your best bet would be to ask to do work experience with the Police. They can go most places a forensic scientist can go but they just don't do the hands on stuff.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

help! work experience in the uk?

We Answered:

Why don't you contact your Police Force and see if they will allow you to join the Forensic division for a work placement.

Call the contact number for non emergency calls and ask to speak to someone in Human Resources.
