Harvey Said:

I want to gain work experience for my multimedia course at university, What is the best way.?

We Answered:

Find company info best to contact company HR dept or head of specific dept your interested in

send your Cv with info of your course & interests include a cover letter or if on email put the cover letter in the email & attach your Cv too...

Ask for a work placement or internship (they are unpaid) say when you can do it...

You may get travel expenses & some pay you a fee per day towards lunch...some places pay nothing.

Most placements will be for a minium of 2 weeks and some may be 3 months min or even a year!!! If your lucky you may get a day a week after a short placement if you ask which can lead to a future job!!

Be prepared to travel & stay in a hotel paid by you or only choose local places to contact.

Research the company incase they ask for a telephone interview or a face to face.

Good luck

Anyone any experience on dealing with a work experience girl?

We Answered:

Did she have any induction where someone ran through what she was expected to do, when she expected to start and leave, etc? If not, yesterday would be a good time to do this.

Also contact her teacher/school contact and let them know there are problems.

Problem is, schools tend not to prepare their pupils for work experience and expect employers to do it. Whereas employers think school might have at least run through the basics instead of sending out clueless pupils. It's not always a good idea to assume pupils hear about work from their parents either. I have a friend who was a teacher and really pleased to secure work experience for a pupil who was interested in retail and then appalled that the girl didn't turn up on time and wanted to pick and chose which duties she did. In this case the teacher had a word with the girl and discovered both her parents were unemployed and she simply had no idea about how to conduct herself in a working environment. I suspect you're dealing with a similar problem.

What is better to do post Bachelors qualification-gaining Work Experience or pursuing Masters?

We Answered:

it depends on you. some of my block mates said they don't think they're ready to work right after graduation so they're planning to pursue a masteral degree first. but then it may be hard for you to cope up with people in graduate school because most of them already have work experience. you'll end up being the novice

How would i be able to get work experience in a hospital in the UK?

We Answered:

The best bet is to ask your school to arrange something for you with your local hospital. They should be accomodating in arranging work experience for pupils and will know how to go about it.

If you've finished school, then phone up the hospital and ask the switchboard about who to talk to. I'd imagine it would be someone like the director of medicine or the like. Usually, they too are quite good in arranging something for would-be med students (I work in a hospital and have met a few school kids who were given a couple of weeks work experience shadowing a doctor).

To better your chances, I'd also consider perhaps doing some volunteer work (usually children's wards are begging for people to do some work with the kids). Again, this can be arranged either by your school or directly with the hospital.
