You won't find it easy to just walk in and get hands on experience with patients. To get down to the nitty gritty, you'd be better off talking to your local nursing home. They'll pay you on a part time basis and you'll get a realistic view of how tough it gets, tending to people.

I work in Occupational Therapy, and we have lots of Work experience students who shadow us for a day or two for experience. If you write to the specific department you want to shadow, they will be able to help you organise something.

I did work experience organised through school at an adult Day surgery unit at the local hospital, it was organised by writing to the manager/ departmental head.
