Marine Biology Work Experience

Kristina Said:

How can a 16 year old gain experience in Marine Science?

We Answered:

Hey, I know exactly how you feel, I was in your position a few years ago and the first thing I would say is not to worry, before starting university no one has that kind of experience so it won't effect your chances of getting in, what they will be looking for is good grades in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and English.

The time to get experience is when you are at university, or in a gap year between school and university where you can volunteer on many marine projects (although they tend to be expensive). I know its not really the answer you want to hear but believe me that's when it counts. When your at university show enthusiasm, ask questions don't worry about being the top of the class what is really important is a passion for the subject. Volunteer for things at university, join societies and clubs those things that make you stand out.

What you can do is see if you have a local aquarium, they will often allow school students to do some voluntary work experience with them, without knowing where in the UK you live I can't tell you exactly where to try but google is you best friend there :)

I have just finished my masters degree in marine biology and am currently a research assistant in deep sea ecology so if you have any questions just send me an email and i'll try and help you out, but believe me don't stress you've got plenty of time to gain experience.

What can i do for work experiance that will help me become a zoologist ?

We Answered:

Same here i'd love to be a zooligist , but i've got one whole year till i get to do my work experience. I'd probably choose something to do with animals ,something like working at a vet because you have to become use to be surrounded by animals and learn how to handle and treat them.

I hope i've helped and i hope you find what your looking for.

Good careers for those interested in marine biology?

We Answered:

Your situation sounds very much like my own (loving marine bio, animals, not graduated yet, etc). I'm planning on majoring in biology, and then getting a masters (maybe a phd) in something more specialized. The way I see it, general biology will give me a broad base, and I might discover something I like even more than marine bio. A general biology degree would also be more helpful in carreer searrching (don't ask me what I want to do yet. I have no idea). Just don't go become a professor or teacher. They don't get paid squat. Good luck!!
