Mba No Work Experience

Geraldine Said:

need mba no work experience?

We Answered:

Some Universities may accept a high GMAT score instead of the work experience. Why not look for another master degree other than MBA, like Msc in management, or maybe in marketing, they dont require working experience, and they are more focused. But I think if you graduated with high honors, and scored high on the GMAT, you could be accepted for an MBA.

Jared Said:

How do some people go to MBA school with no work experience?

We Answered:

Almost all MBA programs accept a few students like your friend - students right out of an undergrad program, with no full time work experience after they graduated. But for many MBA programs, they'll only do this if her GPA and GMAT were higher than what they normally require, and if they felt she had the ability to keep up and to benefit.

But in general, MBA programs either strongly prefer or require a couple years of work between the undergrad degree and applying to the MBA. And of course, most employers hiring MBAs also prefer or require that MBA candidates have that work experience.

Your friend, if she wants to get a job after this MBA, must do a co-op or internship or two while she's getting her MBA. Otherwise, she may have difficulty finding a quality position.

Roberta Said:

Can/should I get a top MBA without work experience?

We Answered:

If you managed to make a significant impact at those part-time jobs and/or offset them with substantive volunteer work, then there might be an outside chance, though you'd still have to make a pretty convincing argument. Otherwise, I think it'll just raise too many questions that directly affect a school's perception of your ability to launch a successful career post-MBA. For instance, why were you so focused on short-term survival that you couldn't come up with a long-term strategy while working the first couple of part-time jobs, or why weren't you able to leverage your personal and professional networks along with your good grades?

That said, it's not too late to start using those tactics. Identify jobs and/or companies that you want to be working in, and talk to everyone you can who's either in or has a connection to that field: not in an effort to get hired (although hopefully you'll get some leads or offers of help out of the conversations), but to learn what you should be doing to put yourself on the right path. And do keep an eye out for volunteer opportunities: they may not substitute for paid work (although sometimes they also lead to full-time positions), but if you choose wisely, they can give you some valuable leadership experience and skills to add to your resume. A few years of solid performance, and you should be able to spin the early struggles as not reflective of your ability to succeed.
