Typically not, but it probably depends on what you were doing. Were you just helping out in non-patient-care areas? Examples... gift shop, "candy-striping", helping with kids, etc. If you were actually doing patient care, it might be a different story. The above examples are still good and show that you are well-rounded, so you'll want to include it as volunteer experience or extra-curricular activities, but it's not work experience.

You should try the hospitals, pharmacy, chemists, or maybe the doctor's office? It's easier to find, if you knew someone who worked at any of these places or where you have visited regularly.

Well I'm not too familiar with the UK but aren't there any medical clinics that you could get work experience?? I don't know what the NHS is but if it's full can't you get on a waiting list or something? All you can do is to keep checking with the hospital until something opens up. Let them know that you need this experience in order to get into medical school. Keep trying you'll get there.
