Music Work Experience

Alfred Said:

Any ideas for a music related work experience?

We Answered:

Going to a studio for work experience would be wonderful. The ability to play an instrument wont get you in the door though.

No, what will get you in the door is the ability to use a soldering iron and some basic knowledge of electronics. If you can offer a studio owner a skill he can actually use (sorry but musicians are a dime a dozen) then it will greatly increase your odds of getting in.

I get about 2 calls a week from people that want to intern at my facility and I turn them all away because they have no practical skills to offer me in exchange for the nuisance they represent.

But, if someone called and said they would like to intern and they could also, say, recap a compressor then things would be different.

Good luck

Music work experience ideas?

The local classical music radio station or organization involved with classical orchestra could give you some help! Then there a jazz music club that would have a meeting at a Elks or Knights of Columbus hall!

Where can i find a music year 10 work experience?

Since your only looking for work experience for 1 week I would suggest contacting local schools in your area and seeing what they say.

Finding music work experience?

We Answered:

If you're looking for paid work, then Studios probably won't be interested. Music Tech is a popular area and you'll be against people with both qualifications and experience.

However, you could ask if they would let you work shadow for a month or one day a week voluntarily and get a standard p/t job for money.

Check your local colleges as well to see if they offer any relevant courses to bump up your CV. If they do they'll also have technicians who'll look after the facilities who you could ask to shadow.

Do you have any local radio stations (BBC, commercial)? Again they may be able to offer you some sort of work experience with contact with the producers. Research to see if there are any local community stations you can join.

Have you got any local clubs which offer live music? Volunteer to help set the bands up. Do you have any local amateur theatres? Someone will do the Sound Design and Operation for every show.

Where can I find work experience that involves music?

We Answered:

Why not work with an orchestra? Many large orchestras in Australia would offer work experience placements; but you are kind of limited. Most placements involving music will be with radio stations, music stores, or large musical companies. Radio stations are plentiful, hence the recommendation; whereas other sorts of companies aren't as easily found and don't have the ability to offer placements to students. In fact, most performing arts companies don't have the budget for it either.

It also doesn't help that you don't say what area of music you're interested in: production, recording, management, sales, performance... each of these areas of interest may change who you could apply to and what kinds of placements are available. Do remember that no matter what you do, work experience tends to end up meaning a lot of 'dud' jobs, like general admin, typing, filing, etc. Very few allow actual creative input or responsibility.
