Nutrition Work Experience

George Said:

Is it a bad idea to study Nutrition at degree level with no Biology & Lab experience...?

We Answered:

Shouldn't be a problem, nutrition is mostly pseudo-science :D

Most degrees teach you everything you need to know for the degree. There might be some subjects you would struggle with if you haven't done maths for example, so they restrict intake for that. However it is possible to do make-up courses at adult education centres to get the background info if you need it. CHeck with the unis you are applying to, eail the course co-ordinator and ask their advice on whether you need anything extra as background for admission.

Work Experience ideas?

We Answered:

Perhaps something to do with Defra, they are the department for environment, food and rural affairs (or something along those lines) so what if you got some experience finding out what they do, I know they set the guidelines for food labelling, and welfare standards for meat and eggs and dairy. That would be to do with food... not very much to do with dietition-ing though, but you would discover exactly what goes into food, what makes it organic or free-range etc.

Jordan Said:

Is this a healthy meal plan? (preferably people with nutrition experience to answer)?

We Answered:

This is an excellant balanced plan, however, i would make your lunch more substantial as you require good quality proteins to rebuild the body after breaking it down over long running periods.

Should I work for some time before I start my Master´s course?

We Answered:

Employers prefer that you have some real-world work experience before they hire out out of an MS program. If at all possible, do try to get a year or two of full time work in the field before you enter the MS program.

Most MS programs also prefer that their applicants have a year or two of full time work under their belts. So it will make you a stronger candidate.

Another benefit to getting work experience is that it's a test for you. It will help you make sure that you really want an MS, and that you want to continue in that field. Because who knows? After a year or two of work, you'll see what others, who have an MS, are doing in your place of employment. But you'll also see what an MBA brings to others, and what your other options might be.

Tommy Said:

any1 else found it hard to find work experience?..?

We Answered:

The answer above (mpizz something or other!)had some great ideas. Its a shame the hospitals are full, have you tried private hospitals? Or Retirement homes? Quite often these folk are in need of help due to the fact that most people dont think about asking them.
All I can really suggest is that you try to differentiate yourself in your letters to the companys/organisations. Be sure to let them know it is your life, passion & intended career path not just a hobby as well as add any qualificatons or past experiance. All your after is a little experiance right? Not paid work? Offer yourself as a free entity who can be of valuable service to them. If you have great marks from assignments etc, quote them too.
All the best :o)
