Work experience (PR) ?

We Answered:

If you live near any PR firms, that would be a good place to start.

Work experience isn't as important as you think. I went to the local cinema and had fun with it. I think that's more important than what you're actually doing.

Your school should have a list of everywhere in the area that's interested in taking on work experience students, but if there's somewhere that tickles your fancy you can send them a letter asking them to have you on.

PR in Australia, with 1 Year of work experience in Electronics engineering?

We Answered:

From the purely DIAC point of view, your 1 year of Electronic Engineering experience will get you through the points test provided that it was within the last 2 years and it seems that it was within that time. If you are granted a permanent visa as an Engineer - Electronics, you can then work at any job at all once you're in Australia - there is no requirement for you to work in your nominated field.

Your biggest problem will be in obtaining a positive migration skills assessment from Engineers Australia and without a positive skills assessment, you cannot lodge a visa application. If you gained your engineering qualifications in India, EA will treat those as non-recognised qualifications and you will need to submit a Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) describing your engineering practice. They may or may not accept whatever you did during your 1 year in electronics as adequate.

How to get PR work or experience?

We Answered:

Public Relations is a tricky field to break into; recruiters will ask for the right experience and credentials but the ones who get the job are always the ones who have somehow received face time with HR or with somebody on the inside. This field is heavily based upon people and relationships so you'll need to actively network here to really get your foot in the door.

Applying for positions online is one of the most ineffective and worst ways to job hunt, primarily because companies assign their most junior HR representatives to sift through the online inquiries and usually they'll miss a lot of good candidates. Emailing individuals directly (with a compelling cover email) is a better approach, but it won't always guarantee a response because 1) The company is currently not looking to hire someone of your background or 2) The correspondent was not captivated by your email. You can try being bolder and more memorable in your emails and see if it yields better results.

The best way to go about it is to attend networking events. A lot of groups on LinkedIn or Facebook will be focused on the PR field and might offer networking events or luncheons. Search online and you might find local job fairs or recruiting events that are tailored toward PR professionals. Attend these, with resumes in hand if necessary, and meet people to get contacts.

Another good way, if you have somebody's email address, is to ask if you could meet them near their workplace for a 15-30 minute coffee chat. They'll usually be happy to do it if you express your enthusiasm in finding out more about the company and about the potential opportunities.

With regards to experience, if you can't get your foot in the door for internships or job interviews, take matters into your own hands and offer to help execute a PR-focused project for a local non-profit organization or charity. They'll appreciate the help and if you achieve desirable results you can use it as a VERY powerful tool in your job hunt.

Good luck and I hope it works out!

Nellie Said:

Do the McCanns have some student on work experience doing their PR for them?

We Answered:

Of course they have a PR student... they won't want to part with their "hard earned cash" on a real PR Officer....

Seriously though, you have to admit Dave that despite the fact that these people have f****** up time and time again.. for some reason the world still seems to love them.... it is as if the world is under some form of mass delusion or hypnotism.....

Forget the anticipated world tours, and public speaking engagements.. I anticipate that they are going to be starting a cult [ it's already in the works...] - the CHURCH OF McCANNOLOGY...... Gerry has already reached the spiritual state of Operating Cretan Level 7.
