You need to send your resume out to real jobs you are qualified to do.

In your cover letter you need to state that you wish to work remotely, from your home office. LOTS of companies, especially in CA operate this way. They usually provide transportation for you to come in for an interview and for you to attend company meetings a few times a year, but otherwise everything is done online.

They're just trying to find out how well suited to the job you are. The fact that the supervisor said that he shouldn't be asking you tells me that he hasn't had any decent management training. Perhaps that company isn't really worth working for if it allows it's managers to be so unaware of what they should or should not be saying. However your goal is to get the job so it's actually an opportunity to humour that supervisor and manipulate an obviously inexperienced supervisor into having a good opinion of you, you take the question and engage him in a conversation related to the question that moves off on a tangent, the more you converse with a positive friendly attitude, the higher his opinion of you will be, the fewer opportunities he'll have of asking tricky questions and he'll still have no more information about you than before. Experience related questions are invitations to recant entertaining war stories, granted, your lack of experience also means you don't have a lot of war stories but you probably have a few. When I encounter an inexperienced interviewer like that, I know that the job is a shoe in. Unfortunately, after a while of working for a company, the managers keep asking me to help them with the interviews as I'm pretty good at ripping into the interviewees to find out if they really are qualified. A few people have come up to me after a couple of decades and said they thought I was their manager at their interview but often it wouldn't even be my department.

sure. business major undergrad students who want to get into mba program need a lot work/internships experience and leadership experience when applying to a good mba program. and if you plan to apply to a top one, mostly you need at least 2 years work experience. so becoming a product manager in a fortune 500 company is a really great experience which might stand you out.

Not a good time to go looking for another job, or to let your employer think you are less than 100% committed!

The service desk keeps everyone working and arguably is a more secure role than project management. Projects end, budgets get cut, and all of a sudden there's a bunch of redundant project managers. Nevertheless most of the things you do at a service desk are projects in their own way and you could use them to practise using MS Project or whatever.

Have you considered looking for/ creating a project admin role; by which I mean

Creating the financial business case for the project
Translating it into annual budgets
Tracking financial and technical progress over time.
Developing and maintaining issues and risk logs
Progress reports for senior management

Its one of the zones where both the tecchies and the accountants have an interest, but where both are uncomfortable because its not familiar territory.
