School Work Experience Placements

Patrick Said:

Work experience outfit - placements in schools?

We Answered:

for my work experience i worked in a NHS walk-in centre in my town. I had to dress smart casual. So i recommend that you get some black pants from new look they are like £12, then get some shirt type tops like the ones you usually were with leggings and wear smart shoes that are like patent leather. Get some simple tops from new look, Dorothy perkins or marks and Spencer's. Get some cardigans and just wear them with simple tops and black pants. You can also get casual dresses and a more fancy dress.

Don't wear short skirts/short, low cut tops, trainer like shoes and tops with rude pictures and words. Basically dress like your going to work, but not to over the top. If i was you i just stuck with long black pants, some shirts, simple tops, patent shoes, dresses and cardigans. nothing to expensive. And no jeans but i guess tregging are okay, i wore them like twice when i was on work experience last year :)

good luck

i dont like my school work experience placement?

We Answered:

You should definitely ring the school, as it wouldn't look good if you just didn't turn up and you gave no reason. Perhaps they will be able to find you somewhere else.

Ideally, you should carry on going though. It's only a week and it won't kill you. You know, a lot of people don't like their jobs and they still have to do it every day of their lives, they're just lucky to have a job. So perhaps you should consider it as real work experience! It's not meant to be fun.

School Work Experience Problem?

We Answered:

If it's work experience they won't be 'hiring' you. That's probably where they're getting confused.

Year 10 / fourth year work experience is a common practice throughout the UK, it would be very strange for a company not to know about it. It sounds like you're not explaining yourself properly.

I'm not sure about how it's done in Scotland but in England students usually do their work experience at the end of the year, so it might be worth explaining this if your school does it differently.

Ask your friends how they found theirs and try asking friends and family if they know anyone you could work with for 2 weeks.

However, a word of warning. I don't know how long you've had to look for something but you might be hard pushed to get a confirmed place somewhere by the end of the week due to insurance reasons. This is why schools ask you to find a place months in advance and usually why smaller companies are less likely to take on under 16 work experience students.
