Science Work Experience

Michele Said:

Im looking for a gap year job, based on medical science work experience????

We Answered:

Probably any kind of hospital-related job will be relevant, especially if you can do some kind of technician job that involves mostly on-the-job training. You might also consider working as a research assistant if there is a large university in your town.

Gordon Said:

Where should I go for work experience relating to science?

We Answered:

had same problem. Due confidentiality rules could not get WE with police forensics. Try something completely different. It's just a few weeks and any WE is experience.
If you try hospital you will need a background check which you have to pay for.

Where can i find Work Experience relating to science?

We Answered:

hey! i've no idea how old a year 12 person is! I'm from Ireland and a biomedical scientist. I do know that our labs in hospitals love to talk to students and show them our labs! the problem generally lies in insurance and that sort of thing! When I was 16 a private lab gave me experience, this lab was in quality control and analyzed tablets before they were authorized to leave the factory.
You will be surprised how open the science community is in training and helping students. Send out your cv and a cover letter letting them know WHY you would like to work in their lab; private labs and public labs.
even working with a vet or doctor shows a separate aspect of science and looks great on cvs.

environmental science work experience?

We Answered:

Both of those are options, also the Environment Agency or EPA depending where you are based.

But the bulk of environmental science work is actually done by consultancy firms, usually on behalf of the governmental bodies and water suppliers.

Also bear in mind that the industry has gone through a tough time of late, the slow down in construction and public works brought on by the recession has made jobs and new projects much more scarce than previously.

Byron Said:

Environmental Science. work experience?

We Answered:

Obviously, I don't know where you live, but there's just about always some kind of environmental issue to be solved.

Where I live, it's cleaning up San Diego and Mission Bay, remediating the three lagoons up here in Coastal North County, re-introducing native chaparral to areas that were either developed, or destroyed then, for one reason or another, never developed further. A number of our canyons support ecosystems that are entirely unique to that canyon across the entire globe, including feral parrots populations that have formed from parrots smuggled through the U.S.-Mexico Border. Our reservoirs are often under siege from off-site pollution and soil erosion.

I'm sure that your community has some kind of issue. Any of these areas would be good places to gain free work experience, as they usually have local organizations that function off of non-profit donations. Some organizations are larger than others; Save the Bay is huge, Save Batiquitos Lagoon is much smaller - but also an area where professionals do work.

Groundwater remediation falls under this category, depending on who you're with, but this is difficult to get into, compared to the other areas.

Just look around, there has to be something nearby, even if all it refers to is soil nutrition, irrigation, and erosion issues.

Carole Said:

In earth science where can i work for experience?

We Answered:

Check with USGS they do have volenteer programs, you could get your foot in the door that way.

Forensic Science work experience?

We Answered:

You will not be able to do any work experience in that area. For 1, there are perhaps only 2-3 forensic Anthropologists in Australia (in the US there are less than 100), and secondly any forensic work place cannot have untrained, un-veted people involved (so no uni students and definately no school studnets). Can you imagine the ramifications if the defence found out that a school student was in the same room as the evidence? Not going to happen.

Beware - Bones, CSI etc are all fictional TV series. They are not real. The reality is there were hardly enough jobs in those fields before people knew what DNA was - the jobs have not increased but the number of students interested in "working" in that field have increased 200 fold. The job a uni grad was able to get 10 years ago, you now need a PhD and a post doc yet the salary is the same.

Choose another field.
