Secondary School Work Experience

Gladys Said:

Need help writing about my work experience in a secondary school?

We Answered:

Cover almost everything!

What did you learn from doing the work experience?
What were your strengths? How have you improved any weaknesses?
What did you do with the students? How did you feel your work experience went? What makes you think you deserve a place on the PGCE course? How can you/did you motivate the students to learn Maths? What did you enjoy about doing your work experience in a secondary school? Why did you do it (besides gaining experience?
What makes you want to teach?

Good luck!

Work experience in a school.?

We Answered:

Firstly, visit the school you wish to get experience in and ask if they take volunteers for career purposes. If they do, give them the dates you're willing to volunteer and ask if they're free for you to volunteer in those particular days.

You should then write a letter to the head, ex planing who you are, why you want to get work experience and a little bit on your chat with the receptionist at the school.

Wayne Said:

I need to write a really good letter to get work experience at a secondary school whilst I'm at uni. Help!

We Answered:

It would be helpful to stipulate the primary focus of your degree and state special interests that you have. Give reasons why you would like to work in the school, not just what you can get out of it but what you can offer the children. An enhanced CRB (criminal records bureau) check would have to be obtained if you want to work in a school, even as a volunteer, and this costs about £40.

Christopher Said:

Do you think doing school work experience with a vet i know would be a good idea?

We Answered:

I work in animal care and love it. It'll at least be informative, so give it a go!

BTW, the vet might not let you restrain any of the animals. It takes a lot of experience to do that and he will probably not want to risk the liability.

Sylvia Said:

do you need experience in a secondary school if you wish to teach that age group?

We Answered:

Certainly not. Any experience you can gain in a school, especially if it is voluntary, unpaid work, will show your commitment to education in general and teaching children in particular. Most primary schools would be prepared to accept offers of help with (for instance) listening to reading, helping failing children to gain self-confidence. You never know, you may discover that you would prefer to teach primary children. They cause much less aggro and, on the whole, are a joy to teach and to be with.

Work Experience in a school?

We Answered:

yes, 2-3 days can give you an idea, but the longer you stay, the better idea you get. plan more than you'll think you'll need. you can never be sure how long it will take for a group to do a project. each school is different as to policies, so ask everything you can think of while you get the chance. ask as questions occur to you and when there are no students around. the trick is to keep the students involved and busy. they usually like art, but some will of course do better than others. some might need more coaxing because they feel they don't do well at art. have fun!
