They can volunteer. Check with hospitals, nursing homes, animal shelters and local charitable organizations.

But a student's first priority should be schoolwork, so don't be too hard on them if they don't have jobs. To assist them in getting over their shyness, role-play job interviews in the class. That would be good not only for the person who is role-playing at the moment, but for the entire class also.
