How do I keep my summer students motivated? We Answered:
I used to have this type of program when I worked for a municipal government. Can you tell them that the top two 'producers' get to leave an hour early on Fridays or something along those lines? If you have that authority, tell them you are the judge. If they all work just as hard, give it two one week and two the next (don't tell them that's what you're doing bc the other two will slack off, of course). If the two who don't get it revolt, tell them they will be ineligible for the next week. If you don't have that authority, you might come up with another reward. Depends on who they are and what they value. Less affluent kids might work hard for movie tickets while well-off kids might motivate for lunch bought and brought by you. Whatever the reward is, give it to whomever does even the slightest bit more because that will get them competing. Even if it's just a less boring job from day to day, make them compete. Also, remind them that they'll be looking for a reference from you one day soon. Good luck.
