Summer Work Placements

Keith Said:

What ways can someone get into working in TV (specifically camera work)?

We Answered:

down the little wire and thro the tiny hole in the back of the set

Felicia Said:

Has anyone volunteered to work at a refugee camp in Palestine?

We Answered:

As far as I've heard, you would be welcomed, and it isn't as dangerous as some sections of LA, Miami or Florida. Of course, you should watch out for the Israeli military, the Israelis in general hate anyone who is at all sympathetic to Palestinians.

Jessie Said:

Where is a good place to look for Summer Placements?

We Answered:

I would check out the FBI internships and also take a possible peek at the Body Farm (hope you have a strong stomach!). You didn't specify whether you are a graduate or undergrad student so it's a little harder to recommend appropriate internships. An internship in the criminology, psychology, or anthropology field would be most helpful.

How do Research Placements work?

We Answered:

I am a postdoc in a research lab, and we usually have a few summer students in our lab. It is not very organized. Some undergraduates (and even high school students) who want to work in a lab will just contact a lab and ask if they can work there. Often, they do not get paid, but they will learn a lot, and they can put that experience on their resume. It will also help them in deciding whether they want to move on to graduate school.

An intern will usually be mentored by a graduate (PhD) student, or a postdoc. Even though they do not have the research experience of a graduate student, interns can be very helpful for their mentors. After a couple of weeks, the intern will usually be able to work independently, and get some work done for their mentor.

There are many types of labs (immunology, chemistry, microbiology, physics), and every lab will have different research questions and techniques. So I can not really tell you what your friend has worked on. But generally speaking, an intern will work on a very specific part of a project. The intern will learn a couple of techniques, and then apply them to a set of samples. In our lab (in microbiology) an intern will e.g. learn DNA electrophoresis and PCR. But other labs will teach them other techniques. No matter what lab you work in, you will learn a lot about how research goes (with ups and downs), and how people behave in a working environment. It will be a completely different experience from school, and it will give you a head start in case you are considering to do your PhD.

If you are interested in doing an internship, you can try to contact the professor (principal investigator) of a specific lab. Go to the general website of a university, and find their research (academic) websites. They might list the websites of their research groups and their contact information. If the professors do not respond, see if their website lists the name of a postdoc who you can contact. Postdocs are often very interested in some extra help with their research.

Good luck!

I currently work for a high street bank part time, I wish to do a summer placement with ernst and young?

We Answered:

Sadly, the answer to your question I think is strongly likely to be No! Ernst & Young would definately be classified as another financial instiution given the area's of work they cover.

**I suspect your NOT allowed to work for more than one financial organisation at a time for obvious reasons of security and secrecy. You will know things about the way the bank works which others would potentially find very valuable to them or would like to know about such as systems or the way clients are handled.

**IMO get a definate offer on the table from E&Y before you make your mind up on this, but a placement with E&Y would be considedered quite prestidgous if you got it and would stand you in good stead for another job later on in finance.

**No! I think you would still have to leave the bank to do the E&Y placement if you were offered that chance.

Discuss It!
