Teaching Work Experience

Jean Said:

How to get 6 months teaching experience to work in a daycare?

We Answered:

Start out as a teacher's assistant and then move up. Try day care centers like Kindercare, Childtime or LaPetite.

Deborah Said:

Do you include student teaching with work experience on a teaching application?

Becoming a teaching assistant- have a degree but no relevant work experience.?

We Answered:

Hi Sarah.

Most teaching assistants in the UK have an NVQ Level 3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools. Typically, the Level 3 takes 2 years to complete. I am aware that since you want to leave the UK this summer to work abroad, so that isn't an option for you.

However, schools do appreciate any help they can get! You will more than likely gain voluntary experience working in schools, but as more of a 'parent helper' than an actual TA.
Since you don't have the specific qualifications, you haven't been taught how to interact with children on a professional level, how the grading systems work, first aid, how they're developing year by year, age ranged software for PCs, etc.

You can write to local primary schools and ask them if they'd consider you as a helper in the school, explain why you want to and any qualifications you do have.

You will also need an enhanced CRB check done, to ensure you don't have a criminal record, or a criminal record which includes any assaults against others, or anything to do with children.
The CRB check will cost £36 and I would think you would need to pay for it, since the school won't be employing you.

You may be asked for references, I am sure your university tutor won't mind providing a personal reference.

I do think a school will want your help as a volunteer, but I don't think, unfortunately, you will get a paid job as a TA - it's too competitive and if you don't have the specific childcare qualifications.

Best of luck!

Is substitute teaching and instructional aide a teaching experiences or work experience on a resume?

We Answered:

Since you gained teaching experience and it was a work experience for you, I would place it under both. That's what I did for my resume - I just tried to word it slightly different under each section.
