The Work Experience

Maureen Said:

How do graduate schools verify work experience or full time work history?

We Answered:

Depending on the school, they may not verify anything at all. It's time consuming to do so and schools just don't have the resources to hire full time investigators that private employers do. However, you will have to sign something that states you have represented true facts about yourself. So lying is grounds to have you retroactively removed.

Carrie Said:

What kind of work experience is good for people who want a career in psychology?

We Answered:

This really depends on what area of psychology you are hoping to pursue postgraduate study and a career in after you complete your undergraduate degree.

If you hope to do a Masters degree in research methods or a PhD then yes, experience as a research assistant would be very beneficial. However, if you are hoping to work in an area of applied psychology, like educational, forensic, clinical or occupational to name a few then you need more hands on experience. For clinical psychology, work as an assistant psychologist in a mental hospital would be perfect, or working as a classroom assistant would be great experience for educational psychology. Working with homeless people could be beneficial for a getting into forensic psychology providing a number of your service users have substance misuse issues and/or offending backgrounds. Ideally though, work with charities directed specifically at offenders would be better suited to forensic psychology.

Work as a research assistant might be useful for getting into postgrad study in an applied area but only really if the research is associated with that area. Most applied psychology qualifications do tend to prefer that you have worked in a 'forensic environment' or whatever rather than just conducted the statistics for someone elses research.

I really think you are just aswell to work for the charity (providing you actually get to work directly with the clients of course!) unless a career in research is your goal.

Hope this helps a little!

Terri Said:

How to get work experience for Psychology course?

We Answered:

I've heard students of psychology are required to have an internship at a mental hospital prior to their graduation in order to understand first hand who they would be working with and to gain some experience.

What work experience do I need for Med school?

We Answered:

they would really like it if you can manage to organise something at a GPs as this would show you have experience of both primary and secondary care. Anything that involves teamwork or working with different people from society is good too-how about visiting an old people's home, helpig out at brownies/scout/nursery etc. and also you could volunteer in the summer at a play scheme or camp for those with disabilties.
