Well, your question needs a little more detail. Are you planning a career in the field of animals??? If so, check with local pet shops, zoo, wildlife sanctuary, or animal shelters. Also dog kennels, pet groomers, pet sitters. Call them and explain you want to volunteer for two weeks. I'll bet if you told the vets you don't want to watch surgery it would be ok with one of them.
Be prepared to work at the bottom level of course. Feeding, cleaning cages, exercising animals, etc.
You can volunteer at a health food store if you know someone who can put in a good word for you.
Talk to as many people as you can. There might be something at your local Chamber of Commerce. Lots of businesses try to help the youth out and are familiar with this type of situation.
Persevere - press on - hang in there. And have fun learning and meeting people and just getting the hang of networking for yourself. :)

No, it isn't unheard of. It's called volunteering and beneftis you and the organization you are volunteering for.

Besides, even if people don't do it, go against the grain if you think it will help.

Hi, I am taking the same road as you.. However, I am also considering Intelligence work. Anyway, I don't think that they would discriminate against different schools, I am sure that they put Canadian schools in high regard. I am also enrolling into a school for the coming September. I hear that foreign work can be really competitive, not because there is a lack of work, but because they want people to be on the highest caliber. There is a service exam which I hear is pretty hard, that is probably a very competitive factor.

By the way, where are you in Canada? and which schools are you considering? I may be looking at western..
