Veterinary Work Experience

Amanda Said:

Veterinary surgeon - work experience?

We Answered:

The best type of work experience is by working at a vets on a voluntary basis . Try chatting up your local vet, if you give the right impression I'm sure they will take you on.
By the way the competition for vet Uni is very strong you need lots of A's at GCSE (better if A*) and A levels in Maths, Chemistry, Biology and Physics. The higher the grades the better (preferably all A's !!!)!
Unless you have VERY good high grades AND experience you will not stand much of a chance of a place at Vet Uni.

I'm interested in a career as a veterinary surgeon. What work experience do i need?

We Answered:

Anywhere that involves animals. Zoos or farms etc It might be worthwhile finding out if there is a rescue centre or wildlife centre near you that you might be able to volunteer at.

Eileen Said:

What work experience do I need to get into veterinary school?

We Answered:

Hello.

I know several young people who have had entirely unrelated work experience to their eventual degree course. Although it makes sense to have some experience (and there is already at least one good answer on this), it is not usually mandatory.

I see I've been given a thumbs down for this, yet it is true. Not all young people know exactly what they want to do. and although relevant work experience may assist in gaining a place where places are scarce, it may not.

What to expect in work experience in a veterinary hospital?

We Answered:

yes you will see the procedures, mainly routine spays and castrates, the most important thing to realise is that work experience students will often faint while watching surgery for the first time, it is very important that if you feel faint to leave the room, the surgery is a sterile environment and if you fall onto an open animal you could potentially kill it,
mainly you will be doing alot of cleaning as there is not alot you are allowed to do as a work experience student. you will probably get to go into consults with the vet and hold some animals but you cannot do alot for insurance reasons.

Veterinary work experience?

We Answered:

you missed out pigs, and you need to make sure you actually have experience of horse husbandry
(mucking out etc) and not just helping with riding sessions.
and some people go for experience in abbatoirs but i don't know if this is essential

Veterinary Work Experience?

This will vary from Uni to Uni. Best answer is to check on their website for what they recommend. If you aren't sure which Uni's to look at, give UCAS search facility a good run and use www.unistats.direct.gov as well. Unistats is the results from the student survey's, so you can see what students think.
