Volunteering Work Experience

Ida Said:

What is your most favorite volunteer work experience you've ever had in your life?

We Answered:

In our state, they calculate the # of jail cells they will need in the future by the # of 3rd graders who are not able to read. So I tutor reading. What a joy. The kids have just as many worries/pains as adults, but are frequently not able to identify them. We choose to work in a poorer school where a two parent family is seldom the norm. I provide a positive male adult figure them. What a kick.
Please do return to your volunteer work - whatever its nature.

Chris Said:

What do college look for in volunteering and work experience?

We Answered:

A college is more interested in your GPA and your admission test scores... all that stuff about volunteering and being a "well rounded" person is useless if you don't have the other two. Those account for about 95% of the decision to get in. The rest... don't give (or fret) about it for more than the 5% its worth.

In other words, to answer your question... who cares. Put down the truth and move on.

Donald Said:

explain to me volunteering for work experience?

We Answered:

Where you volunteer isn't important. By working at a volunteer job you'll learn job skills such as being on time to work, being dependable, following directions, working independently, and working as a team member. Each place you work can train you to do things their way, but these skills are necessary wherever you work, and will impress an employer. Places differ on the age of the volunteer, but places that use volunteers are rec centers, hospitals, libraries, food banks, police station, parks dept, animal shelters.

Loretta Said:

Is it OK to put volunteer experience in the work experience part of my job app?

We Answered:

I would put it on there. It shows them that you know how to show up on time and you can follow directions that someone gives to you.

Eduardo Said:

Does volunteering count as valid work experience?

We Answered:

Good for you hun! That's such a lovely thing to do. :)
l'm hoping to volunteer with Deaf people when it comes up on the list but anyway!

Any work relations, including volunteering, work experience and original jobs all count as working, whether it's paid or not, and it will look amazing on your Curriculum Vitae (CV) and you can also ask for a reference so that in future, any jobs you apply for will get a good feedback about your work and you will more likely to get a job. Any experience you do when volunteering, whether it's administration or even working in a library, you're most likely to get jobs within a library and administration industry: PAID.
