Work Experience Activities

Debra Said:

Is it this enough work experience/activities for someone who wants to do a History degree?

We Answered:

Work exp at Parliament looks respectable anyway, if it involved anything analytical or researched based you can include this. Natural history museum, not really relevant to specific topics in history, but at least you're expanding your ideas and exploring other areas. Lectures are obviously good to add, and peer mentor/10k run will also look good.

For history there isn't a lot you can do, just be clear on what areas you are interested in - you should probably find some time periods that interest you and read up on it -it then gives you something to put on your application, as well as something to talk about at an interview - you'd shown independent, wider reading of a non academic related topic, and is a genuine interest.

As long as you get the grades you need, you should be fine.

Joann Said:

What are the prohibited activities in work experience?

We Answered:

That depends on who are you doing your work experience for. Schools and workplaces all have different sets for rules. If you ask the person or group you are doing work experience for (not the place where you are working, since they might not be aware), they should be able to tell you what you need to know.

Wendy Said:

How important are work experience and extracurricular activities important to college?

We Answered:

Not as important as your money. If a college is comparing you to another student for admission then they are 5% important. In addition, they help you if you are seeking scholarships.

Eleanor Said:

What activities are good examples of medically elated work experience?

We Answered:

Your problem will be that it is getting increasingly difficult to find such work, unless you have a contact.

You need to show to medical schools that you have experience in a medical/pseudo medical setting. So, hospice, old people's home are fine.

It is also a good idea to have evidence that you are a sociable "people person". Even playing in a sports team (and I detest sport) is good because it shows that you can relate to others and co-operate in a team situation. Other examples from my past students have included Sikhs who served food/drink to elderly people at their Temple, or Jews who took young children off to Summer camps (etc etc).

Can you show the medical schools that you can relate to, and work with, other people?

But also, find out about BMAT & UKCAT exams!
