Work Experience Choices

Gabriel Said:

Year 10 work experience choices?

We Answered:

As you play hockey for a club outside of school, why not look for something like sports administration? Whether it is hockey or basketball or football, you might want to look up local sporting clubs or check out the sporting codes applicable to your state (e.g. AFL, Rugby etc) and approach the clubs and the governing body to see what might be available.

Or contact some local primary schools and consider working with the primary school kids with music classes. Either of these suggestions would give you a good idea of what it would be like to take your hobby and use it as a job.

Thinking of becoming a lawyer, what work experience would you recommend?

We Answered:

If you can land something at a law firm it would definitely be ideal. You can try shadowing a lawyer or (more likely) a paralegal; you'll probably be limited to filing papers and the like, but at least you get exposure to what they do for a living, and you can say you worked at a firm.

Once you get your diploma, consider working as a legal secretary- you work at the firm like a typical receptionist does, but in some cases under the supervision of an attorney or paralegal, you can produce some of the documentation. In many cases, you don't need any formal legal education to do this.

Jobs like this are an excellent way to start off in networking and building a rapport with the legal staff- in the long run, they might just be the ones who help you land jobs once you pass the bar!

What should I do for my year 10 work experience week?

We Answered:

You can try asking art galleries or museums. Or if there is an college near you that specializes in art and design, you can ask them. Or art/painting shops. If you are interested in fashion, you could try getting work experience there.
Or you can ask your school if you can do your work experience in the art department. Or another school.
Make a list of all the shops/studios/colleges/schools etc.. that have something to do with art & design and then put them in ranking order from where you would most like to do your work experience to the least. Then one-by-one contact them, starting from the top, and ask if you could do work experience.

First Choice? Thomas Cook?...work experience?

We Answered:

I know for a fact that Thomas Cook take people for work experience (I used to work for them). Probably your best bet is to go into the store where you want to do work experience, and ask them if they have vacancies and what you need to do. A lot of them have rules and regulations/ arrangements with specific schools etc... alternatively you could try an independent travel agent (eg not a big name) which would give you the same experience and probably be easier to get into.
A lot of colleges/universities also do cabin crew training courses, which you have to pay for, but are useful if that is what you really want to do...
Hope this helps

What should I do for work experience?

We Answered:

I went to a lab. I t wasn't that great because you couldn't really do anything, so go somewhere you'll be able to do things, like a school or office. Several people in my year went to schools, and they got to read the kids stories and stuff, which sounded fun. Are you in year 10, because that's when we did it, if you're older they might let you do more stuff.
