If you've never written an article, and have no idea of how to write one, I find it hard to believe that any newspaper would consider hiring you. That's like applying to the airlines to be a pilot, but you've never flown a plane.

If you still think it's something you want to do, you should read both of those newspapers, from front to back, every day for the next few days. See what sort of things they write about, and get a sense of the style they use. Then write your essay using as many of the same techniques as you can.

This is a very interesting topic. It sounds like a topic that you can definately write a lot on. Your experinece and what you plan to include in this essay is exactly answering the question. Quick tip: be sure to include anectodes (short flash backs) and small examples of events that support your experience with working around these different races. You might also want to include dialouge, which also makes the essay more interesting!

You don't realize it but you just wrote your paper!

The staff was not welcoming = The staff was reserved and I was disappointed by the employees' lack of interest in my assignment.
It was boring = It was difficult staying motivated
I was super depressed = Keeping a positive attitude was challenging.
Staff didn't smile = The staff kept a serious demeanor.
They told me to clean when I was playing with children = When I tried to spend time with the children I was directed to carry out more mundane tasks of cleaning.
It was horrible. = It was unpleasant.
Worst week of my life. = It was a difficult and challenging experience.
I went for 5 days - I remained committed for the duration of the project.
I tried and thought I was helpful = I applied myself and followed directions
don't think staff didn't like me = I felt under appreciated
kids were awesome = In spite of the negative atmosphere I found the children to be a joy.
I didn't gain any experience = I was disappointed to not be given the opportunity to work directly with the children.

wow, that's really good you know.. just a suggestion, but this-

When you open the little gate you have to walk along the path and you could see a massive grey transparent door with a security lock, and you have to press the call button so the women in the office can allow you to come in.

could change to:

Once you've opened the little brown gate and walked along the crumbling path a massive transparent door comes into view. There was a security lock on the door and any visitors had to press the call button in order to enter. I remember having to stand and wait for the woman in the office to allow me to come in. ??
