Are you ready?

How do I find work in the film industry?

We Answered:

Hey, Edwin,

Most of the people I've worked with started in community theater. I guess you could say that they got their start as "playing the daisy in their kindergarten play." They did community theater, then reached out. (Hey! Ya gotta be seen to be discovered!)

- Work on getting some parts in local theater, or, if possible, in your college's plays.
- Take lessons at a comedy club. (Lots of them offer classes in stand-up comedy.)
- Do karaoke. (Yes! Seriously!)
- Get head-shots taken. List the stuff you've done. (from playing the Daisy to your most recent role.)
- KEEP ACTING!

If you're looking for places to act, consider the TYPE and STYLE of actor you'd like to become.

Comedy? Hit the comedy clubs. If you're SERIOUSLY good, consider getting a few fellow comedians together and forming a troupe.
Drama? Hit the stage! Do those dramatic scenes!

Whichever you do, INVITE PEOPLE to see your shows.

SELL YOURSELF! Look for acting opportunities and open casting calls. DO NOT do extras work ane expect it to develop into an acting career.

TAKE ACTING LESSONS! Whether you're working with a renown studio like Herbert Berghof in NYC, or taking acting lessons from some guy in town, TALK TO THE PEOPLE THERE! Studios almost ALWAYS have gigs available, and acting coaches can frequently point you in the direction of serious roles.

NETWORK. (See above!)

Talk to your college! (You never know what they may have available!)

Check out Craigslist.com. They frequently post positions looking for actors.

ALSO: GIVE YOURSELF AWAY FOR FREE!!! YOU need a reel! And some acting cred. What better way to do that than offer your services to aspiring film makers, writers, directors, or other cinema-related folks? VOLUNTEER to be in a student film. The only "payment" you should accept is either a DVD, tape, or "file/movie" of your scenes in them. (with the ability to post them on the web or duplicate and distribute as a form of advertisement.)

Oh! And if you were talking about doing BEHIND THE SCENES WORK in the film industry? Contact your local cable company and enquire about doing Public Access. They'll teach you everything you need to do to get started behind the scenes. :)

Best of luck!

Erica Said:

I want to work in the film industry- does anyone have any advice at all?

We Answered:

Honestly, the only reason to go to school for film/media is just for the degree. The majority of the big names out there didn't go to college for what they do. Quentin Tarantino doesn't even have a high school diploma, Keenan Ivory Wayans was a manager at McDonald's. It definitely isn't necessary to go to school for it, but it will help just a bit. But working with the actual equipment is the best experience, if you can't afford 20,000 worth of equipment right now, then going to school for it might be what you need for the hands on experience.

Work experiences in the film industry?

We Answered:

I think you might struggle to find a film set here in the uk when you want to go, however i would suggest you look on the web on film company sites.

Perhaps you should think about asking to work at your local theatre many actors start in theatre and work their way up from there

hope this helps.

We Answered:

Start out by getting educational experience, and try to get an internship or perhaps long-term job shadowing.
