Work Experience For Graduates

Ruth Said:

In times of recession, what is better? Going back to study or getting work experience?

We Answered:

You are in a catch 22 situation. A masters degree will carry you very far in life, but work experience is the tool to get you there. Look in to your chosen field of study, and decide which areas in the job market make up that field. Try for a lesser paying job that will give you the experience you need for the future, and get the masters degree at the same time. It will take alot of work on your part, but will pay off later.

what is the solution for fresh graduate who doesnt have enough work experience?

We Answered:

Start at your school career center, get registered there and sign up for all their workshops to help write resumes, dress for interviews, convert volunteerism into employment jargon, etc...

Seriously consider working for the federal gov't. They are a very good employer, numerous advancement opportunities and lots of jobs everywhere. www.usajobs.gov

The large majority of graduates have only minimal work experience (retail, restaurants, etc..) so you're actually on the same level. Don't sell yourself short. But you must be aggressive about seeking a job. Don't just sit in front of the computer and "post" your resume. Internet posting sites aren't as successful as their ads make it sound.

Visit your local workforce center (state agency) and get registered with them as well. Seek out large employers in your area and see if their HR person will just spend a few minutes with you. Especially in the field you are looking for a job.

Looking for employment is a full time job!
