Linda, Sophie has not 'joined' the company, she is 14 and doing 'work experience'.

This sounds to me like someone at this particular W H Smith's branch need's a kick up the tail end! Having a 14 year old girl lifting and stacking boxes' of paper for 2 hours solid is just not on. The idea is not to use a 14 year old as a skivvy and this work can be taxing for an adult. The cartons will be marked with the gross weight to comply with H&S regulations and if above the limit for single person lifting this should be marked on the carton. I have no doubt that the cartons were within the limit, i also have no doubt that this young lady should have been shown the correct way of lifting. But all that is beside the point, giving this task to a 14 year old girl who is there to see what the working world is like was ill advised.

Based on the information above, it sounds like they were at fault. You should have pursued the situation through litigation, but I'm not sure what you can do today, unless you can get several people to testify in your defense, to include dated photos/video if possible.

Companies whose employees have a Trade Union have Health and Safety Reps who do a 3 month building inspection and highlight any problems to management, but it is everyones responsibility to ensure that their work place is safe and report any findings to their management.

In the UK the main governing body is the Health & Safety Executive who have strict guidance on the net for anyone to check. If an employer refuses to rectify an issue they are then reported to this body who then do their own investigations. Employers can be prosecuted if they do not rectify an H & S issue.

your education is probably okay.
maybe a bit over done.

maybe the first thing to understand is the function of the position.
the function is to make the company look good.
not to make the company more safe, by insisting that it spend money on projects.

there probably are courses that focus on rules and regulations relating to workplace safety.
and your main job would be to satisfy those rules, for the least amount of money.
