Depends on how old you are, but a good grounding for fashion is to get a Saturday job in a decent retail environment, eg Myer, because that way you get a strong insight into what sells and what the public wants and doesn't - very useful when it comes to deciding what to put in the zine later.
If you really want fashion experience - difficult at any age! - try for a job with a fashion agent or distributor to see how fashion is circulated. look at the yellow pages.
or see if you can get an office job at the design college, or with a fabric printer, or at the Herald-Sun which has a big lifestyle department.

Any labels or recognised brands would be could. Maybe model agencys? It's hard to get in with the top dogs but start sending out letters to designers, it doesn't have to be huge designers. If not you'll have to try the retail industry, you can then go into the fashion forecasting side of things.
