Work Experience In Television

Seth Said:

If I have lots of experiences of working in television so that would be likely to get a job in television?

We Answered:

To put it simply, to get into this sort of career, you are going to NEED a degree. It doesn't matter how much experience you think you have, if you don't have a degree basically saying you were trained in that sort of career path, they're not just going to take you and hire you.

But it also depends on what you're trying to do. Saying you want to "work in television" is a very broad statement. What do you want to do? Be a reporter? An anchor? A camera woman? An actress? An extra? A game show host? A talk show host? What do you want to do?

If you were asked to go on an interview they would without a doubt take the person with the credentials over you.

Yes, some career paths are based on experience, not necessarily schooling, but any sort of media, television, communications, journalism path, you need a degree.

Betty Said:

my daughter is after a placement at granada studios work experience?

We Answered:

Oh, for goodness sake! Where do these arrogant people come from?? I think it's great that you're helping your daughter.

Both ITV and the BBC have a structured work experience placement system. You just need to go onto their websites, find the relevant link, and register. However, there is likely to be a long waiting list, so do it quickly!

It might also be worth looking at independent tv documentary companies, of which there are hundreds. You could limit your search to companies in the north west.

Good luck.

Mattie Said:

How does one set foot into the film industry with no experience at all?

We Answered:

Where do you live?

If you can start as an intern that is a good way or as a PA (production assistant). Almost everyone in the film industry with a real job started at the bottom as a production assistant.

If you don't know someone in the business -- offer your services for free to begin with and then work your way to a paying job.

If you're in a big city like NY or LA it's best to get started on videos or commercials as a PA. If you're in another city you need to find production companies and go in with a resume and say you're looking for an internship and want to become a PA. You can then try to find the department you're looking for to intern in. Camera, Wardrobe, Art Dept. Production etc.

Kyle Said:

I really want to work in film when I'm older...?

We Answered:

Well:

I know the acting side of it, people can do that with no qualifications and sometimes it is down to luck.

But I think you may need some sort of qualification or get yourself into a film school (I know that's how Martin Scorsese did it) you have to pay quite a bit (like getting a pilots license)and get into a film school and then make a bunch of short films and send them off and hope you get noticed. It's what I want to do when I'm older, but I took the A-Levels I needed /:

the easy option is become and actor, be sh!t at it and then become a producer, I mean most actors these days produce, act and direct.

Discuss It!
