Work Experience Law Firms

Vicki Said:

would doing work experience at a law firm help me when applying to uni to do an economics degree?

We Answered:

It all depends on what you what particular career you want to be in because economics is very broad. There is likely a branch of economics in law so any experience that eventually leads to a career is important. However if this has nothing to do with your major then you're just working and gaining a reference.

Neil Said:

What clothes should i wear for work experience at a law firm?

We Answered:

Having worked in law firms for 36 years, I can tell you that each firm is different. Each has its own culture and preferred style of dress. A simple dress that is not too short and flat or lower-height heels would be find (with pantyhose, unfortunately) until you get a feel for the culture of the office where you'll be working. Just be sure everything matches. Your hair should be neat and controlled - not fly-away or intricately styled. A simple ponytail, bun or pageboy style wlil fit in nicely; just nothing theatric.

Summer interns generally end up making photocopies, delivering mail, filing, serving coffee to visitors, running errands, etc. In other words, the office scutwork. Some firms will actually give you some "real" work; consider yourself fortunate if that occurs - and enjoy.

Most important, be clean and neat - and punctual. DO NOT show any cleavage or thigh; if pants are permitted, do not wear denim/jeans and don't wear pants that are lowcut at the waist. Go light on the makeup and, forego nail polish since it will only get trashed by some of the chores you may have to perform.
