This is like comparing apples and oranges really as both will give you great degrees to start off your career, but the university culture and general cultures are quite different.

In all honesty I'm going to aim you toward Sydney, for 2 reasons a) I live here so am biased haha, and b) you mentioned you have family here. Having family is a big plus as they can, hopefully, put you up for a brief period while you get settled. Studying overseas is an expensive prospect, no matter where you go.

You can get to the snow from Sydney quite easily, in fact it's only a 5 hour drive, or you can take a coach or fly down. The snow season is generally June - September. Sydney has mild weather all year, at least compared to Nottingham. Summer can get as high as the 90's (something I'm sure you're used to there in Houston) and winter as low as the 60's on average, sometime 50's. It can get below freezing overnight mid winter, but not that often and not very low.

Sydney has plenty of history and the Rocks are quite a good example of colonial Sydney. Also travel is quite easy, it's not unusual for people to travel to Melbourne or Brisbane for the weekend. University life in Australia is generally a little more relaxed and informal than in England (you still have to do your work however), and a lot is left up to your own research to do. In Australian universities you attend a lecture which is where you obtain your information, then you attend a smaller tutorial which is where you discuss the work and ask questions. There is a lot of self direction in what classes you attend in that when you register you can select the lectures and tutorals you wish to attend for the semester. Be wary as the most popular lecture/tutorial combinations go quickly, in that most people would prefer to have the lecture and tutorial on the same day.

Sydney is also the financial capital of Australia, and to a degree Oceania. There are many large international banks and accounting firms with their Australian head offices in Sydney, example can include KPMG, HSBC, Goldman Sachs and our own "Big 4" banks with international presences, those being Commonwealth Bank, Westpac, ANZ and NAB. Sydney also is home to the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX), which is an excellent plus for anyone who wants to enter investment banking.

As for rude folks, some people may make fun of you being from Texas, but it's generally good natured. It's no worse than walking the streets of Houston, as long as you don't come across as arrogant or that the US is superior. As far as many of us are concerned Australia is better than the US and we don't like to hear the infamous American arrogance. Just be yourself and you'll be fine.
