Work Experience Placements In Hospitals

Dianne Said:

Can I go to a hospital for a work experience placement or am I too young?

We Answered:

I'm in year 11 so most people are 16, however there are a few who have birthdays after when we are doing it and the hospital have all basically said that you HAVE to be 16, and in some departments such as midwifery you have to be 17 or 18 so sorry but it seems like you'll be a year too young. you could organise some extra work experience next summer when you are 16 though, as you'll have a long summer after your GCSE's so it won't eat into your holiday. Good luck on becoming a doctor though!

Aaron Said:

What do you think about my work experience letter? please be critical?

This is a very well written letter.

I've made a few alterations; take what you like, if anything.
*************************************

I am fifteen years old and attend (school name). At present, I am doing 11 GCSEs and one AS level. My predicted grades for all these GCSEs are A's. During school hours, I am a member of the school council which has helped to build me communication and teamwork skills. Outside of school time, I volunteer at my local charity shop where I serve customers.

I am seriously considering entering into medicine because the pursuit of knowledge and the preservation of life are two key aspects that I would find fufilling and meaningful. I have already begun some research on the subject and am particularly interested in medical ethics.

I believe the best insights would be gained by actual work experience in a hospital because I would see firsthand the work of leading clinicians which would allow me to gain a fuller appreciation for the challenges involved in this incredible vocation. I am particularly interested in Cardiology because the heart is a major organ and many of the diseases and conditions of the heart can be life-threatening. However I consider that the work is not only challenging due to the importance of this organ, but also because of the variety of different diseases and conditions that can affect it. I feel that the importance and variety of the work means that I would find shadowing a cardiologist both beneficial and fascinating.

I understand that being a cardiologist is an incredibly demanding job and am able to be very flexible about the dates for the work experience.

I hope my letter has shown how dedicated and enthusiastic I am about medicine as my career choice. I am grateful that you took the time to read this letter and would very much appreciate it if you would allow me to gain work experience in your department.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,
