Work Experience Policy

Martin Said:

i am applying for pgd in social policy,i dont have any job experience, how can i write statement of purpose.?

We Answered:

examine the key words within the person spec and the job description and highlight these as your qualities and ensure you stress how you are going to be an asset to the employer. Also use your life experience as the experience you have had so far. So start by stating that you wish to apply for the job as you posses the qualities as it has been described in the job description and also state that you are an effective communicator and have good organizational skills and an ability to use your own initiative(this is the key) and that you are able to work effectively as a member of the team as you are aware that communication is the key to effective team work(in developing your statement use all the key words to sell yourself presenting it in a coherient manner

What should I do? Bad GPA from college but good test scores/work experience.

We Answered:

Don't worry.

My nrother had a really bad GPA but really good test scores, letters and work exp. and he got into all the top schools.

Ron Said:

Would the top MPA and MPP programs really reject a great student who has no work experience?

We Answered:

Really depends on how competitive they are, but most schools are looking for great potential students, and for a diversity of experiences in their student body.

So your internship certainly helps! Your academic record and preparation and especially your references from professors matter. If they are using GRE scores that matters. At the end of the day, though, top schools have a pool of people who are all really well-qualified and more than they can admit. At that point they use a lot of strategies to make offers.

Certainly someone with a long work record in a prominent position brings great strengths and gets consideration. But young people bring enthusiasm and new ideas and other kinds of experiences. If you have experience with different cultures, or have done volunteer work with particular populations, if you have ways to show your background brings something different-- sometimes it's as simple as "we haven't had anyone in the program from Connecticut in years..."

(True story: my 4.0 niece with max SATs and a year as an international exchange student didn't get into Princeton undergrad. Her package was pretty good but they have a lot of kids like that and already had two from CT... makes you wonder how GBush got in..)

At any rate, you may as well apply wherever you feel you have a chance and would like to be admitted. The worst that can happen is you don't get in, and that's the case already if you don't apply.

Ray Said:

Provision where work experience on a particular field can be credited in college to a subject. CHED policy?

We Answered:

I'm not sure that is what it is called, but you can get college credit for work experience in the same field.
It is up to each institution how much credit they will give.
You need to document you work experience, any non callege classes in the field, and any CLEP test on forms provided by the institution, and they will evaluate it and determine the amount of credit if any they will award.
