Work Experience Summer 2010

Tammy Said:

Experimental Psychology Work Experience.?

We Answered:

To be honest, and not to be condescending, but I don't think you really need to worry about it at your stage.

The majority of experimental psychology work is done in universities under the supervision of people with PhDs, and often its a bit of a push for them to trust 20/21+ year old undergraduates (who have had at least 2 or 3 years specific training in the stuff they need to do) to not screw up all their work. The kinds of stuff you would need to be able to know (e.g. statistical analysis, a grounding in the area, specific methodological skills) to be of use to someone like that kind of requires at least a year or two of an undergraduate education. Unless you know someone in a research position in a university, it would likely just mean a lot of extra time/work on their part to bring you up to a level where you would be able to help them, so its not really in their interests to do it (especially as undergrads and people who have already graduated also look for experience). Not to mention there would likely be a lot of admin/ethics hassle for someone your age to even be around a research environment (we have enough paperwork, so we try to avoid extra).

The best you can probably aim for is (they'll likely need to hear from your papents) to email/ring someone in an admin office at a university (or any institutions near you if there are any, e.g. educational offices), tell them you're interest in psychological research, and ask them if they know of any way in which you could be a participant in any research (though educational ones tend to go through schools rather than look for individuals) or possibly shadow someone for a day (unlikely for the above reasons, and most of the time is spend at a desk on a computer anyway). You can always ask your science teacher or something to if they know of anything that might be useful, the scientific method as applied in biology, chemistry etc. isn't much different to in experimental psychology.

But yeah generally, I don't think you need to worry about it much. Concentrate on getting good marks in your GCSEs and A levels etc., if you get into a good university on a psychology degree, there'll be a lot more opportunities for experience available to you then (either in term time or a lot of places do research placement/apprenticeship things over the holidays).

Working with horses for the summer 2010?

We Answered:

John Staples was long listed for 2 Olympics and takes working students for 1 to 4 months, whatever is needed by the student. His mom also happens to be British, so you could hear a familiar accent from time to time! It is a great family atmosphere, and usually a fun barn to hang out at; it is close enough to town that you can get to the grocery store in 3 minutes, but not so deep in town that you feel too constricted. They've had brits before, as well as girls from all over the states. The most they've had in the summer was 8 (too many!) and the least was 2 (not enough!) I boarded and taught there, and I highly recommend the barn.

John is currently working with the safety aspects, course design, and has a couple of new horses coming up as well as client horses, students and boarding stable. http://www.windermerestables.com/

How could I explain past work expirence?

We Answered:

Well, this is a lie situation. Whatever you do, you can't tell the interviewer you haven't liked the jobs you have held. You need to portray yourself as some kind of saint.

Supermarket - "I enjoyed working with my fellow employees and learned a lot about good customer service."

Accounting intern: "I appreciated the opportunity to get some real-life experience in the accounting field."

Secretary: "It gave me experience in being on the 'front line". Again, I have learned more good customer service skills and fit in well with my co-workers and managers."
-------------
Stuff like that.

Would a year of work experience at Six Flags be efficient for landing a job at WDW or Universal Studios?

We Answered:

That will definitely help you get hired. It doesn't matter that Six Flags isn't the same level, it's still similar experience.

By the way, Harry Potter won't be a theme park. It will only be a section of Islands of Adventure.

Discuss It!
