Graphic design work experience?

We Answered:

I did some graphic design work several years ago, and my best experiences were things I did for free in my spare time. A few restaurant menus, little websites for friends' bands, etc. They also can go in your portfolio! Of course, it doesn't pay, so if you need money, too, I'd suggest working at a print shop of some kind (smaller local shops would be better than Kinko's). You would get to learn a lot of things relevant to the printing side of graphic design, which is a very big advantage.

Good place for Year 10 Work Experience?

We Answered:

Is there anything you're particularly interested in as a career?

I strongly advise AGAINST going somewhere where you know the people that you'll be working with; work experience is a fantastic opportunity to build your confidence by going into an adult environment where you know no one. For me it was certainly the first time I'd been amongst adults who weren't family members or family friends, and although it was scary, it did wonders for my self-confidence and self-esteem. So I think you should definitely avoid places like your old school. Take the plunge and go somewhere entirely new!

Personally I worked on two local newspapers for mine, and really enjoyed it, although journalism wasn't the career I ended up taking.
