Work Experience With Horses

Margie Said:

work experience in stables with horses any advice?

We Answered:

I think that you will do fine with helping in stables. Horses do not judge. As long as you approach them from the side, so that they can see you - they cannot see forwards - approach confidently and stretch the back of your hand out so that they can sniff it if they do not already know you. Make no sudden movements but if you approach confidently and purposefully you will have no problems with most well trained animals. If they do walk off it is nothing personal. They are just playing hard to get.

Watch the ears and get to know what they mean.

If you find following instructions difficult, you can obviously read and write so you might find it helpful to write lists as to what you need to do, and what you need to take with you to do it. You will learn as you go along. Remember anything gets easier with practise. Like putting your clothes on. You do not need to know everything! That comes with experience and no-one knows everything about horses. If they say they do, they are lying. You go girl! There are many people in your situation who do wonderfully with horses. Follow your dream.

Perhaps you could approach the yard owner with your parents who can help you to explain your difficulties and what special considerations would be needed to keep you safe and enjoy your time there. If you do find things difficult you must speak up, either to your parents or someone in charge. Some people may seem impatient but that is because they have little or no understanding of learning difficulties but they should not be allowed to bully you.

I hope you do get somewhere to help out and that you enjoy it.

Harry Said:

What should I wear for work experience with the vet? I will be around cattle, horses, sheep etc livestock?

We Answered:

It depends on the vet, but usually they like people doing work experience to try and dress reasonably well. Scruffy clothing is not acceptable. Dark fabric or corduroy trousers would be preferable to jeans and flat, sensible shoes preferable to trainers. Sandals should be avoided, even in summer, for safety reasons.

You would also do well to bring a warm, washable jacket and waterproof trousers and wellies. It is important to try and maintain hygiene between visits and keep the vet's car clean, so bring wellies AND shoes, so you can change.

Avoid wearing dangling necklaces, earrings or rings, also for safety reasons.
