Work It Work Experience

Anna Said:

Will work experience help a Phd application?

We Answered:

It depends on the program. Some that I've checked out require work experience as part of showing that you can be successful in your craft not just in the classroom but also with applicable experience.

That is why so many people take a 2 or 3 year break between their masters and phd. Work experience helps you to apply what you learned and examine and narrow your focus your things such as your thesis.

Really, if you have no experience at all then you're just a scholar and having a phd won't make you much more likely to get hired.

I wouldn't worry about clubs, and voluntary work unless that are directly related to your field. One option though is to find a nonprofit organization that's mission fits with your field of study and volunteer for them. This way you have some experience applying what you learn in school but you can volunteer at your own pace and not get overloaded.

Janice Said:

Is working in a florists good for work experience?

We Answered:

local florist shop would allow you to see

- how small businesses work
- what is meant my great customer service
- daily operations for the business (managing relationship with suppliers, inventory management etc.)

The point is any experience will allow you to learn things the next thing you want to do. You just have to focus on the transferrable skills (i.e what you can learn and take to your next job).

Shirley Said:

Hi I am a qaulified makeup artist how do I get work/work experience in the film or magazine industry?

We Answered:

I don't know where you are, but have you tried working with local theatre companies? Probably no money there, but someone might have information that would help you.

Glen Said:

How old do you have to be to do voluntary work (work experience) or holiday work at a veterinary practice?

We Answered:

Depends where you are. In my state you can be 14 or 15, but it has to be truly volunteer, which means no pay. Once you are 16 you can be hired for pay if they so choose. Call some of the shelters or vets around you and ask them what their rules are.....

Ian Said:

Have a Sociology degree but no work experience?

We Answered:

Of course not! You can get a job in public relations or many other jobs. You have been to college. This implies that you have many useful skills. Not just in the area of expertise you chose. You are young, there is much to learn in many aspects of life. Try volunteering in your spare time at your local orphanage, or somewhere you'd like to be employed.

Luis Said:

If I don't have work history/work experience, do I skip it on my Resume?

We Answered:

You can just skip it and create a section for other things. For instance, a section for volunteer work and a section for skills that you have that could be valuable. If you've won any special awards, that go along with classes or clubs, you can add those as well in an "Awards Received" section. Hobbies could be good for someone in your position. Of course, you want a section for education history as well.
