Work Overseas No Experience

Charlotte Said:

How can I successfully get a part time job as I got no work experience?

We Answered:

First you need to check into the local laws and your visa -- are you legally able to work in Melbourne?

As for interview tips -- 1. Be honest and sincere. "I have always been a student and have not held a job. However, as a student I . . . "
2. Before you try for a job, can you do some volunteer work? This will help you tell your employer that you aren't afraid of hard work.
3. Make your resume about your strengths rather than your experience. Explain the things you have done, and how they can relate to what you expect to do at your job.
4. When you get an interview, be sure to study for it --- Find out about the company you will be working for, the type of work you will be doing, and come prepared to ask questions.
5. Don't be afraid of the "not so good" jobs -- these give you great experience. For example, a lot of future law students work as "runners" in a law firm. This enables them to see what the work they will do is, but does not require specific knowledge or experience.
6. Smile and be confident. The worst they can do is turn you down.

Good Luck!

We Answered:

hmm.... tough one. im a guy, and this has happened to me before, so i suggest that have a great party on your last night, then see if he follows you to your bed. if he wants to, he probably will. you have to remember that he also knows its your last night and might try again.

I am trying to obtain employment through KBR.?

We Answered:

KBR is a leech. Are you content with sucking this country dry? Want to know why we're currently in Iraq? Researching this company and other subsidiaries of Haliburton is a good place to start.

Ethel Said:

My friend has come back after working overseas for a few yrs.....but she can't get a job?

We Answered:

When you repatriate there are any number of things that could affect employment. The most common issue is how to successfully relate the kind of work you did abroad with the kind of work you are looking for. Don’t be overly specific in the resume. I would suggest submitting the resume to a professional service for review. 90% of the time a poorly or ambiguously worded resume will close the door. The ‘too much’ or ‘not enough’ experience lines are classic ‘I don’t like your resume’. If she wants, she should push the recruiters to be more specific.

Adrian Said:

Is it possible to get a job overseas without any work experenice and without joining the military?

We Answered:

Well, unfortunately a lot of places will require you to have some work experience or experience with the language. Tokyo will definitely want you to know Japanese and be able to hold a conversation in it if not fluent.

Honestly, it may be better to join the Peace Corps, but that may not be what you're looking for because your work will mostly be spent helping people in poorer countries. They would give you work experience and usually some experience working with the government. They will also work with you to learn a language.

Also, studying abroad is different from getting a job oversees. Studying abroad will focus on studying and you may be able to get a job oversees if you know the language well-enough. Most schools will require you to take several semesters of the language before allowing you to go over to another country unless it's like England or Ireland. Studying abroad programs will usually help with housing placements, but they cost a lot of money.
