Work Placement In

Melanie Said:

How can i get a work placement in a wedding planning company?

We Answered:

Hi there. I don't know a thing about weddings, but all companies should consider creating a work placement, if they like the student who is asking.

You could get a list of wedding planners and approach them one by one. (Get your hands on these wedding magazines at the newsagents and look through the adverts)

The yellow pages should also be of help.

Also, you could phone up other wedding related companies like florists, cake makers, wedding stationary people, caterers. All of these will have had some dealing with wedding planners, so they might be able to tell you which ones are out there and which ones they like.

Also, get in contact with the really prestigious places to get married.. cathedrals, castles, palaces. Those will have definitely have links to wedding planners and might be happy to chat to you.

Which translation work experience placement should I choose?

We Answered:

The words which grabbed me here were "different and interesting". You have probably learned already that the career of a translator can be a tedious one, especially when stuck in one particular rut. Moreover, if one specialises in one particular field and no other, then it is difficult to move into things which are more diverse, as one tends to be labelled and categorised. My experience of the translation industry is that ideally one should know something of as wide a field of subjects as possible and then have an in-depth knowledge of a particular area of activity. At the moment you have no knowledge where life is going to lead you or what further interests you might find yourself acquiring. It is also important to make contacts wherever you possibly can, as any one of them could lead to a valuable source of work. Moreover, you might ultimately decide that you want to move out of translation altogether and instead build upon your linguistic expertise in a new career, using your translation skills as a valuable adjunct to whatever else you are doing. I would not wish to influence your choice, but I simply offer these reflections as the fruit of experience. I would congratulate you on concentrating on German as well as French, as I think that this is a language in which there is a particular demand at the moment. I hope that whatever you decide, it will go well for you.

Todd Said:

How do i go about apply for work placement at a newspaper?

We Answered:

Have you completed an internship or done any writing for your school paper? Papers hire reporters based on their experience in the fields. If you've written about being a member of the conservative party, that would have been good. If you are really into politics, have worked on an elected officials' campaign and other such events, that's good experience.
But newspapers want to see clips of your writing or anything proof that you have experience with. Note that it is very competitive out there and you will have to start at the bottom of the rung unless you come from an Ivy League School.
Good luck!

How long should a work experience placement last?:-?

We Answered:

typlically three to four weeks.
but if you have connections/or you work in parents/relatives place you can often work for three days or so and say you worked for three weeks

ofcourse, you can always work for two weeks but work for like three companies in one summer/one long holiday
but personally i think one week may NOT be enough

2 weeks is acceptable.. but safest 3-4 weeks, shows of your level of commitment and how much you learnt

Discuss It!
