Universities usually have several reciprocal arrangements in place so you may get to choose but from within a group of colleges of a similar academic standing to the one you now attend. Also the subject you are reading may narrow down the possibilities. Ask for a copy of the list.

Edit: my understanding of your question was that you are considering a period of study in the US whilst attending and graduating from a British university.

Any time of the year is a good time.

In the summer people like to take holidays so staffing may be a problem and it may be easy to find an opening. In the winter students are involved with academic work so fewer of the, are able to take up extra hours.

Staff shortages in certain UK sectors mean there is always openings for international students.

Don't think in terms of good or bad. Just go out and be confident about finding a placement and you'll find one. Apply as early as possible in order to have the best chance.

You could approach the employment agents like Resources, Michael Page, Robert Half etc. or you can search the job listing through the local newspaper. You probably can find their web sites easily. I think you have better chance in the east coast like New York, New Jersey, Connecticut....good luck.
