Year 12 Work Experience

Teresa Said:

Can you help me find some work experience?

We Answered:

Best way to do this is to get out and speak to all your contacts - friends, family, teachers. Ask them if they know anyone else worth speaking to. This is called networking and if you do it properly you will find the work experience that you want. A good article on networking is at

Ron Said:

How are you supposed to get work experience in the criminal justice industry?

We Answered:

Never take required years of experience at face value for any job. About six months now, I would expect to see job listings requiring "two years experience with Vista operating system"!

Since every criminal justice job is civil service, entry level jobs do not require law-enforcement experience. And most certainly, an appointment to a police academy is based more on your academic record than anything else.

I suspect you were looking at *advanced* jobs, and not entry-level.

How can my 12 year old daughter get experience working with dogs?

We Answered:

She can volunteer and help out shelters/animal aid etc until you get a dog. Then get her enrolled in 4H! Anyone can join 4H after they are 5-6 years old and can stay enrolled until 20-21.

She can learn obedience (which is very important for the behavior of the dog), showmanship, and agility. She can compete in everything from the county fair to state championships. It will prepare her in case she would want to compete in higher competitions when she's older, and it will personally draw her and her dog closer together. I really encourage it.

Also, 4H will cover grooming/behavior just about anything you can think of.

I started showing my dog in 4H when I was twelve (I'm 15 now) and I've loved it!!! It is lots of fun. Although I don't know a specific 4H website, try searching something like "dog 4H" on Google for now. At least look into it. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Discuss It!
